Draw Instructions
For Graduating Clinical Students: List Both Core and Elective Clerkships on Draw Requests
You will need to enter your draw requests by listing all of your remaining core clerkships in the order of your preference and select your desired periods for each. Then list all of your desired electives in the same way.
Remember, since this is the ONLY time you will be given priority over first year and other continuing clinical students, you will need to think carefully about which core clerkships, during which periods, you want to take during your final year. As first year and continuing clinical students are drawn to the various core clerkships, it will become very difficult to find empty slots to accommodate changes after the DRAW.
For First Year Clinical Students: List All Core and Possibly the Two Required Ambulatory Internal Medicine and Neurology Clerkships on Draw Requests
All first year clinical students are required to take Medicine (MED 300A) and Surgery (SURG 300A) during their first year, in addition to 2 of the other 4 core clerkships: Family Medicine (INDE 301A), Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBGYN 300A), Pediatrics (PEDS 300A) and Psychiatry (PSYC 300A). In order to ensure that you have at least 4 core clerkships on your first year schedule, you must put in ALL SIX core clerkships with ALL periods listed in the order of your preference. You are also advised to list Medicine and Surgery before the other core clerkships. If you are drawn to more than 4 core clerkships, you may drop them during the FIRST SHUFFLE. If you are drawn to less than 4 core clerkships, you will be assigned to at least 4.
The 3 required clerkships are Ambulatory Internal Medicine (MED 313A), Critical Care (ANES 306A,N,P) and Neurology (NENS 301A). You should plan to take Critical Care during your second clinical year, or when you have finished the required prerequisites. In order to make sure that each student will have a chance to register for Ambulatory Internal Medicine and Neurology, you are advised to list them on your DRAW requests.
After all the core and required clerkships are requested, list all of your desired electives in the order of your preference. Since you may not know what periods you will get for each of your core clerkships, you may want to put in your elective clerkship requests with as many periods as possible.
